Topic: TRAUMA AND DELINQUENCY: An Overview of Basic Connections
Description: This session is an overview of current research surrounding the connections between trauma and delinquency. Although trauma is a spontaneous protective mechanism used by the body to stop or thwart further (or future) damage, trauma is often manifested in delinquent behavior for youths whose trauma is untreated. Three major sources of trauma, known to be common to youth, will be explored. Physical and emotional effects of trauma will be discussed. Sources shared for available research.

Speaker Bio: Juanita M. Cleaver Simmons, PhD. serves as Consultant for MJJA. She is Senior Diversity Consulting Partner with Atlanta-based Talent Management Consultants, LLC. She specializes in training and designs for workplaces and institutions. She was awarded emerita associate professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she served in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis division of the College of Education.
