Exclusionary discipline, a student’s removal from their classroom or school due to their behavior, is a tool increasingly used by schools and school districts to address student behavior. However, existing federal data shows that students with disabilities are disproportionately subjected to higher rates of exclusionary discipline than their nondisabled peers. Inequitable and exclusionary school discipline has a devastating impact on young people and their families. This webinar will inform participants of the legal protections for students being subjected to exclusionary discipline such as suspension, expulsion, involuntary transfers and informal school pushout and will provide education advocacy strategies to prevent these practices. We will focus on practical skills and tools that advocates an attorneys can use to advocate for students facing exclusionary discipline. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of what exclusionary school discipline is, what laws are in place to protect students, what protections students with disabilities have in disciplinary proceedings, and what resources they can reference for support.
