MJJA Seeing Nomintation for Board and Leadership Teams
1/11/2010

Dear Member of MJJA:

May of 2010 ends the term of service for many MJJA Board Members and Leadership Team Members. Therefore, we are seeking nominations of potential candidates. This is an exciting opportunity and we hope that you will assist MJJA in this effort by nominating yourself or someone else to serve.

When thinking of possible candidates, you might consider co-workers as well as people who are not necessarily involved in juvenile issues, but who would be interested and willing to share their skills. We would like to engage people who have skills in public education and fundraising, including individuals from the corporate sector. Those individuals do not need to be current members of MJJA but do need to be willing to join. We hope to present a slate of candidates that has a diverse set of skills, high energy and is geographically and culturally representative of Missouri.

The following describes both MJJA service opportunities:

Board of Directors
The Board is a governing body, consisting of up to 15 individuals. Board members serve for three-year terms, and can be elected for two consecutive terms. Board members meet quarterly and generally a full day (including travel time) is required. Additional information about the responsibilities of the Board of Directors is available from MJJA.

Leadership Teams
There are four Leadership Teams: Policy, Program, Public Education and Development. Each Leadership Team is chaired by a Board member and include four to five members. Terms on the Leadership teams are for two years. Leadership Teams develop annual plans in their respective areas based on the organization’s long range plan. Attached you will find additional information about the Leadership Teams and the responsibilities of each.

Nomination forms are attached to this email and are due no later than January 31st. A nominating committee will be established this month and charged with reviewing nominations, making contact with potential candidates and presenting recommendations to the Board of Directors in March, 2010. New Board and Leadership Team members will begin their terms June 1, 2010.

Please call me (314-615-8443) or Vivian Murphy (573-636-6101) to discuss any questions you may have. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this effort.

As always, thank you for your continued support of MJJA!

Kim R. Moeckel, President
MJJA Board of Directors

Governer Blunt Announces Nearly $1.74 Million in Juvenile Justice Grants
11/3/2008

JEFFERSON CITY—Gov. Blunt today announced that $1.74 million dollars in federal juvenile justice grant funding has been awarded to community agencies that help at-risk children.

“These grants for juvenile justice programs are an essential part of Missouri’s overall crime prevention strategy,” Gov. Blunt said. “By providing resources that work with at-risk children, we are better able to keep Missouri children from committing criminal acts as adults.

Juvenile Justice Grant funds have been awarded through the Juvenile Accountability Block Grant, totaling $699,846; for Title II Formula Grants, totaling $987,308.98, and Title V Community Prevention Grants totaling $57,000. Juvenile Accountability Block grants are typically awarded to agencies serving youth state-wide and local governmental agencies such as juvenile and family courts. Title II and Title V grant recipients include local government and community-based agencies.

The Juvenile Accountability Block Grant program provides federal funds for delinquency intervention and court services programming, equipment upgrades such as security and transportation equipment, and capital improvements. Title II grant funds are awarded to agencies that provide restorative justice, aftercare or reentry, and delinquency prevention services to juveniles. These services are based upon established best practices for treatment of at-risk youth. Title V grant funds are awarded to city or county governments, and are utilized to implement or strengthen community-wide delinquency prevention programs.

The Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Group (JJAG) and Department of Public Safety staff continuously monitors and reviews all award recipients to ensure they remain compliant with the grant guidelines.
